HPLC Accessories

HPLC is an abbreviation for High Performance / Pressure Liquid Chromatography. It is widely used in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and other related fields. It is a variation of the column chromatography and utilizes separation techniques to identify the chemical compounds, to quantify them and separate them.

An HPLC apparatus consists of mainly three parts: -

  1. A pumping device - used to generate a difference in pressure or pressure gradient. Instead of gravity, this pump drives the mobile phase through the column which is very densely packed.
  2. A steel enforced column and syringe for injecting the sample
  3. Apparatus to measure the absorbance like UV - visible spectrophotometer.


HPLC can be applied to any sort of chromatography like normal phase chromatography, reverse phase chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, gas chromatography, ion exchange chromatography etc. Therefore, this apparatus has many parts and accessories. Auto Sampler Vials and caps - These are commonly of the dimensions of 8 - 9 mm. The cap may be magnetic or screw top. The vials are made of plastic mostly.
Column Couplers - These are used to connect to columns in series.
Bottles and their caps are used to contain the mobile phase.
Degassers for mobile phase, Ferrule puller tool, dessicant for chromatography etc are also available.
Column Jackets - these are made of reinforced steel.
Column Savers are used to preserve the column after use.
Column Storage Cabinet stores the columns.
Filters - Filters are placed at the Inlet of Mobile Phase so that the mobile phase does not get contaminated. Syringes are also fitted with filters.
